Hello Babydoll: The Undiscussed Rules of Gyaru

The Undiscussed Rules of Gyaru
Hello Babydolls, despite the many amounts of substyles seen in Gyaru, there are many undiscussed rules that older Gyaru who have been in the community for longer may not have told you about.

I also want to discuss some tips and tricks for my personal makeup.
Firstly, Gyaru is more than just makeup - It's a lifestyle; Get Involved. If you want to be more in touch with Gyaru, I recommend going to Gyaru hangouts to stay in touch with the community. Also, as Gyaru, we must live up to this GOLDEN rule, "Get wild and be sexy!" Go out, have fun!! Make friends! Many Gyaru are very kind and hospitable.

Secondly, makeup is necessary, you can not be Gyaru without makeup. Many Gyaru in Japan testify the fact that Gyaru is a makeup based subculture. People like Paris Hilton may fit the Gyaru criteria (tanned skin and light hair) but she is NOT Gyaru because she doesn't wear the makeup.

Thirdly, Gyaru is also very fashion based. A lot of Gyaru usually have their own fashions that are unique to their substyles. Ex: Hime Gyaru is more based off of frills, pink and lace detailing. If you are simply wearing a black outfit but do the makeup, you may be "gyaru" but it may not read as Hime Gyaru to other people depending on where you live. It's important to realize that you do not have to belong to one substyle and put yourself in a box to stay that style for your whole life (If you want to of course). You can be one style one day, and another the next. Most Gyaru usually maintain one substyle, but it is not mandatory.

The fourth rule is to do research; it's important to know about Gyaru before you participate in the style, ask yourself:

  • Do I want to be apart of this style?
  • Do I know about this style? The motifs?
  • Do I realize the additional precautions that might come with Gyaru?
  • CAN I do Gyaru?

Make sure you KNOW about your style before you partake in it. It will make your life so much easier; trust me.

The last rule I want to talk about is... BE NICE, and HAVE FUN. Be nice to your fellow Gyaru; no matter how bad their make may be, or their coord (outfit), be kind to them and if they ask for concrit (constructive criticism), give it to them; you may help them! Welcome baby gals who are new to the style with open arms and educate them about the style! As the first rule states, make friends! Having fun in the style is also very important. If you aren't comfortable doing Gyaru makeup but consider yourself a Gyaru, you are not Gyaru. A big part of the style is not caring what other people think, so never be too harsh on yourself. Most Gyaru that you may look up to or admire usually have been Gyaru for YEARS.

P.S, if your character on a virtual game is Gyaru, or if you like to draw Gyaru, that's fine! But you are not Gyaru.

------Tips and Tricks-------
1. Don't use white under your eyes unless you are experienced with Gyaru makeup. It usually tends to look worse. If you are doing a more doll-like approach to the style, use white eyeliner pencil to highlight the waterline to make your eyes bigger.
2. A droop is NOT necessary. Many Gyaru usually do not droop their eyes unless they are Manba or Yamanba. It is completely up to you. Here's an example of the droop vs. no droop.
As you can see, the non-droop still reads as Gyaru, but I would recommend using the "puppy-liner" technique instead of a cat-eye to read as Gyaru.
3. Wear Contacts. I cannot stress this enough, but please wear contacts. They can enhance your eyes a lot, and they are a staple of Gyaru makeup. They can transform a look from "basic", to cute! I would recommend PinkyParadise.com to get your contacts, as they specialize in kawaii fashion and cosplay.

It makes a minor difference, but goes a long way. My eyes look way bigger and more "kawaii".
4. When doing Hime Gyaru/Himekaji, use a lighter pink blush instead of a more red blush. It makes the cheeks look more lighter and it matches well with pink coords!

That's all for today. I hope I was able to help baby Gyaru with rules as well as tips and tricks for mastering Gyaru makeup! Get wild and be sexy!

- Goodbye, Babydoll
